Many of you know Lorena who works in Time Out Tavern kitchen. She is a hard working great lady. She had saved up money to send her 15 year old grandson to Nicaragua for vacation. Tragically he drowned while at the beach. We are trying to raise the money for transportation of the body and funeral. My Spanish is pretty bad and she was crying and from what I gather she needs $1,500. We believe she will need more than that for the funeral. Please stop by and help out if you can. We have a few generous offers as the news came out and it is greatly appreciated. We would love to see the help in donations of $20 to $100. This way no one is taking on the whole burden. As usual all your help is appreciated. Time Out Tavern Escazu, 2289-3217 12-29-08

Greivin is now 19 and was born in a very poor family in the town of Playa Bandera. His single mom packed watermelons in the season and cleaned houses when
there was work to support her 3 children. Greivin got the highest grades in grammar school and completed 6th grade against all odds. There was no chance that he's ever go to high school because of the cost of books, transportation, supplies and uniforms.
A friend and I stepped in and covered his expenses for the years of high school and he graduated with grades in the high 90's and with honors. He's now in university studying computer science engineering. We continue to cover his study expenses but added to that, he now has some living expenses since he stays with a family member and has to contribute to the household. We cover that also.
He needs a computer and we are not financially able to cover this added expense.  I have heard that 2nd hand computers are almost thrown out into the garbage in
the USA. Can anyone help me to get a computer for him? You would be investing your time and effort into the life of someone who really deserves it.
Thank you in advance.    Charlene,

July 2008-October 2008
A group I am part of is organizing a donation to two very poor indigenous schools, located on the Terraba reserve (between San Isidro del General and Buenos Aires de Puntarenas). We will be collecting gifts for 30-35 children in two different schools. Our personal contact is the only teacher at La Sabana de Buenos Aires, and his wife teaches at a neighboring school. Though they are not sure why, their respective schools get very little governmental support, and they report that every December, their students watch as the government busses rumble by, never stopping to drop off school supplies. Between July and October (exact date not yet known), we are gathering up any and all supplies to give these children an early Christmas. In the near future, we will have photos and more information about the children - favorite colors, dreams for the future, etc. If you can find it in your heart to donate anything, small or large, please contact me (erin [at] gringuitica [dot] com). Truly, no donation is too small or unneeded. We're looking for everything: pencils, notebooks, erasers, old school books, calculators, rulers, flash cards, learning games, children's books (Spanish and basic English), art supplies, crayons, used computers (even if they need some repairs, they could work out), ANYTHING! Many of the children are also in need of basic clothes and shoes, as the 2+ mile walk to school can be long and hard for them. If you'd like more details on our project, or have something to donate, please contact me. Please note that we cannot accept monetary donations. Thank you! ~Erin R. erin [at] gringuitica [dot] com

We're El Puente - The Bridge, operating in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in Costa Rica.  Our goal is to help people help themselves to self-sufficiency.

We're working with families who were originally living the U. N.definition of "Extreme Poverty" - earning less than $1 a day - and helping them grow out of that into self sufficiency. We're helping them do it for themselves.

At the same time as we help families "bridge out" into our culture, we're also helping those who are working to preserve and protect the Bribri culture, with assistance in preservation of knowledge of medicinal plants, Bribri language materials, and more.

Currently, we're entering our 5th year of operation. We're supporting 26 children in school, we have made 28 microloans, and we serve about 150 people a week at a Community Kitchen that meets at our home three days a week. We continually respond to emergency medical requests. We've been asked to help find funding for a medical clinic in the interior, and that project is proceeding. There'll be much more - you can join our newsletter mailing list to stay up to date.

We exist primarily on donations. Your donations help with school expenses, food costs, and more that enables us to meet our goals here.  We operate through a 501 (c) (3) non-profit in the USA, so any donations are tax deductible.

The Voz Que Clama Mission in Tuis de Turrialba does an incredible job of helping these poor people and their children. The Mission needs our help as they have no financial funding. Please take a moment and read Helen's story about her trip to the Cabecar Reservation. The reservation is not a tourist destination, no one sees these people, they are for the most part, invisible, and yet there are about 10,000 Cabecar.

The truth may be that many do not want to see, or know the reality of Costa Rica's original but most discriminated against people. Our farm borders the reservation, the journey from the first village to our farm is a very difficult 8 hour walk. Few indigenous are able to make it but those who can, traverse through our farm giving us an upfront and personal connection with our neighbors, the Cabecar.

You can help these poor people by bringing a suitcase of donated supplies on your next trip to Costa Rica. Contact me at ginnee@gmail.com for drop off instructions. 100% of all donations including monetary goes to helping the indigenous, no one makes a salary. You are the best foreign aid that will ever come to Costa Rica. If you can help, please do so, tax deductible check's can be sent to:
